Theology and Religious Studies: Peace, Trauma and Religion
With a Master’s degree in Theology and Religious Studies you can take up several roles in society. You could become a care provider or assist in peace processes. You could work in an advisory capacity for an organisation, institution or company, supporting cooperation between employees with differing world views or religions. Alternatively, with a specialisation in a particular religious discipline, you could work within a religious institution or faith community.

The one-year Master's degree programme Theology & Religious Studies focuses on specific professional fields. You will be prepared for a professional career within or outside religious institutions. Each specialization focuses on their own field.
Peace, Trauma and Religion
Religion is often misused to incite violent conflicts, but at the same time, it is one of the strongest ethical and spiritual resources for conflict resolution and transitional justice. This Master’s programme explores and teaches the knowledge, skills and insights you will need for a career in the growing field of peace and conflict studies.

On graduation, you will have the skills you need to become an interfaith leader in our increasingly multi-religious world. You will be able to critically analyse different theological, philosophical and ideological perspectives at the interface of different religions. You will have acquired inter-religious literacy through your participation in various dialogue activities.
You will be qualified to work in any institution that demands inter-religious competencies: schools, hospitals, governmental and non-governmental institutions as well as corporate environments. Religious professionals and leaders will also benefit from this programme.

If you finish your first four courses with an 8 or higher on average, you may switch from this Master’s programme to the Research Master; this must be approved by the Examination Board before February 1st for a smooth transition.
When you leave, you will have the skills for crossing interfaith borders and building bridges between religions; skills that many employers are looking for today.

The Faculty’s Admission Board will decide upon your admission after having evaluated your complete online application.
In order to gain admission to one of our Master’s programmes, you will need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent.
Students with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology or Religious Studies from a university abroad will only be admitted following an assessment of their degree by the admissions board.
Students with Bachelor’s degrees in other disciplines are also welcome to apply, provided that the degree obtained is from a research-oriented university. Before the start of the academic year the student needs to have an intake with the coordinator of the specialization. The aim of this intake is to discuss possible deficiencies in theological knowledge of the student.
General English language proficiency requirements
VU Amsterdam requires all applicants to take an English test. You can, however, begin your application without having the test results. Exceptions are made for students who have completed a bachelor or master in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.
