Master of Science of Education at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU)

The English-language Master's program "Educational Science" at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) is aimed at both students and practitioners with a Bachelor's degree and basic educational knowledge. The focus of the English modules of the program is on international adult education, continuing education and lifelong learning. The modules offered in English are aimed specifically at groups of people with little knowledge of German. Three different study variants are offered for these groups of people:

• First, there is the option to study the Master's degree with English-language modules entirely in Würzburg.
• Secondly, there is the option to participate in the double degree program "Management of Educational Services, Adult and Continuing Education" with the University of Padua. Students can thus not only earn two degrees, but also study at least one semester at one of the oldest universities in Europe.
• Third, a large proportion of the English-language modules can be taken in a hybrid mode. On the one hand, this enables location-independent online study, and on the other hand, it results in the possibility of studying only individual modules.

Master of Science of Education: Study Content

The Master "Educational Science" (120 ECTS) is divided into an elective area (90 ECTS) and the final thesis (30 ECTS). The elective areas are divided as follows:

• Elective Area I: International Discourses on Education and Lifelong Learning
  • International Perspectives on Education, Ethics and Sociality; Media Education in an International Perspective; Lifelong Learning: International Perspectives and Policies; Management and Organisational Development from the Perspective of Education and Lifelong Learning (Organisational Education and Pedagogy, Educational Management, Educational Guidance and Competence Development); self-directed international learning project (internship, own developed project)
• Elective Area II: Empirical Research in Education: Research Methods and Fields of Application
  • Application Fields of Research in Education; International-Comparative Adult and Continuing Education (Adult Education Academy)
• Elective Area III: Adult and Continuing Education
  • Adult and Continuing Education as Educational Field of Action; Contexts and Theories in Adult and Continuing Education.

For the master's thesis the topic may be freely chosen with consideration of the lecturer's research contexts.

Master of Science of Education: Career

There are also differences between the three study variants with regard to the degrees to be obtained:

• Individuals who choose study variant 1 with the English-language modules in Würzburg have the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in Educational Science from the University of Würzburg.
• Individuals who choose study option 2 with the double degree program with the University of Padua can earn a double degree: Laurea Magistrale in Management dei servizi educativi e formazione continua from the University of Padua and Master of Arts in Educational Science from the University of Würzburg.
• Individuals who choose study option 3 with the English-language modules in hybrid mode will have the modules they attended certified in the form of a Transcript of Records.

Students will be trained to think and research adult education and continuing education scientifically. In addition, judgment, organizational, analytical and planning skills are fostered. Possible fields of activity for graduates include adult education, educational counseling, educational management, science and research, vocational and in-company continuing education, and intercultural education. Due to the international orientation of the program, students are supported in developing international networks and positioning themselves on the national as well as international job market of adult education/continuing education.

Master of Science of Education: Admission

The Master "Educational Science" always starts in the winter semester. For admission to the Master you need:

• A Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) in the field of education or a comparable field of study. 
• A proof of basic pedagogical knowledge in the equivalent of at least 40 ECTS in four competence areas:

1. basics of educational theory (at least 5 ECTS)
2. in-depth knowledge of educational theory (min. 5 ECTS)
3. historical pedagogy (min. 5 ECTS)
4. research methods and empirical educational research (min. 10 ECTS)

An overall grade point average of at least 2.5 or a grade point average of at least 2.5 in the four areas listed above is required.

No qualifying exam is required!

For the Master "Educational Science" it is required to have English language skills on level B2. For the Double Degree Master, level A2 in German is required in addition to level B2 in English.

The application deadline starts in mid/end of May each year. The application deadline is July 15. The application process is entirely online.
