Linguistics: Text Mining
In the Master's programme in Linguistics, you will explore these questions and more. You will learn to analyse the learnability of languages, describe languages and even combine language with artificial intelligence. You will become a language expert who is specialised in Text Mining.

The Text Mining specialisation is also taught entirely in English. In this specialisation, you will look at how to use computer systems to analyse linguistic data as efficiently as possible. The focus here is primarily on large amounts of data, or big data. An essential component is learning how to program, which allows you to control an artificial knowledge system in such a way that it extracts meaningful data from a mountain of linguistic information. To do this, the system must understand how that language works. As a programmer, therefore, you will also learn about language systems so you can teach this to the computer. In this specialisation, you will, therefore, make the connection between linguistics and artificial intelligence.

When you successfully complete the Master's programme in Linguistics, you will have analytical and research skills in the area of language and language systems. In addition to these common skills, you will possess specific skills for your specialisation.
If you complete the Language Consultancy and Linguistic Documentation specialisation, you will be in an excellent position to conduct research and make language descriptions of previously undescribed languages. You can work, for instance, as a consultant or researcher in the domains of language consultancy, linguistic documentation or (Bible) translation.
When you graduate with the Text Mining specialisation, you will have the right combination of knowledge of language and artificial intelligence. This enables you to extract information from large amounts of text. You will also know how to program, and will therefore immediately be employable as a data analyst.

Admission is based on a strict selection procedure. The Faculty’s Admission Board will decide upon your admission after having evaluated your complete online application. In order to gain admission to one of our Master’s programmes, you will need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent.
Additional admission requirements track Text Mining
The track Text Mining is an interdisciplinary Master’s programme and open for application to students with an academic Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in Linguistics, AI or Computer Science, but also for students from other academic Bachelor's programmes.
Students who do not have a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, AI or Computer Science and wish to enrol, should have either knowledge and skills on the level of an introductory Bachelor’s course in Linguistics or have solid skills in programming in Python. The linguistic knowledge, skills and insights can be acquired in, for instance, a course Introduction to Linguistics of an academic Bachelor's programme. For information or questions on how to meet the requirements, please contact the coordinator of Text Mining: Hennie van der Vliet (h.d.vander.vliet@vu.nl).
The Faculty’s Admissions Board will review whether you meet the admission requirements. If you have an academic Bachelor’s degree other than Linguistics, Computer Science or AI, the Admission Board will bring you into contact with the coordinator of the Master's programme Text Mining.
English language requirements
You must always present official test results proving your proficiency in English. You can apply online without having the test results, but in case you haven’t taken a test yet we advise you to plan a test date as soon as possible. The qualification or test result must have been awarded no more than two years prior to the proposed date of enrolment. Below you will find the minimum English test scores for the English taught programmes at the Faculty of Humanities:
Exemptions from providing the English test scores are applicable to students, who:
The required evidence should, if possible, be included with the complete application. If either unsatisfactory or no evidence of English language proficiency has been provided with the application, admission will be conditional upon the provision of such evidence. This condition will be clearly indicated on the offer letter and must be fulfilled before enrolment at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
