Over the next two years, the Northern Netherlands will receive €6 million from the Dutch government to accelerate the training of semiconductor industry professionals. This investment, part of the Beethoven plans, could increase to €22.7 million between 2027-2030, ensuring the Netherlands retains key industry players like ASML.

Tackling the Talent Shortage

The semiconductor sector faces a staff shortage, with 38,000 extra professionals needed by 2030. As part of the Beethoven initiative, investments will support training programs in Eindhoven, Delft, Twente, and the Northern Netherlands.

By 2030, the Northern Netherlands expects to train 600 additional graduates, with 290 per year thereafter. Efforts will focus on increasing enrolment, reducing dropout rates, and attracting talent to the semiconductor industry. Graduates will find opportunities at ASML and its regional suppliers (e.g., Witec, Hittech, NTS Norma).

Strengthening the Northern Tech Region

Jouke de Vries, President of the University of Groningen, sees this as a major step toward strengthening the Northern Netherlands as a tech hub, already leading in Smart and Green Systems. NOM aims to position the region as the fourth tech hub in the Netherlands, leveraging its talent, research groups, and high-tech companies.

Government & Industry Commitment

Numerous regional governments, institutions, and companies have pledged support. Recognizing international talent as essential, efforts will also focus on attracting both Dutch and international students to sustain long-term growth.
