Veterinary Medicine; Farm Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health
This Master's programme Farm Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health focuses on preventive healthcare for farm animals (ruminants, pigs and poultry). You will learn to help livestock farmers set up their businesses in a way that keeps animals healthy and effectively prevents health problems regarding both individual animals as well as herds. As a graduate of this programme, your expertise in the areas of animal health, animal welfare and public health will enable you to interact professionally with individual livestock farmers and government and industry bodies in the animal production.
Students who complete the programme are awarded a Master's degree in Veterinary Medicine. With a Master's degree in Veterinary Medicine, you will be licensed to practice across the full spectrum of veterinary medicine. Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is the only faculty in the Netherlands to train new veterinarians.
International accreditation
The School of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University is accredited by both European organisations (NVAO and EAEVE) and the overarching bodies in the United States (AVMA) and Canada (CVMA). This means graduates can work as veterinarians anywhere in the world.

The Master’s programme Farm Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health trains students to the Master's degree in Veterinary Medicine. The three-year Master’s programme comprises 180 EC and is divided into the major and electives.

Hygiene, Microbiological and Pathological Diagnostics, Management and the Veterinarian’s Societal Responsibility, Responsible Use of Experimental Animals, Intramural internships & theoretical education, Veterinary Public Health, External Education in Private Practice, Basic Externship Companion Animal Medicine, Basic Externship Equine Medicine.

A choice of five tracks
The Master's programme offers students the opportunity to choose a specialised track. There are five tracks: one health, animal welfare management, governance and policy, research, in-depth clinical training. Choose the track that best reflects your own ambitions and interests.

As a graduate, your expertise in the areas of animal health, animal welfare and public health will enable you to interact professionally with individual livestock farmers and government and industry bodies in the animal production chain. You can choose to work as a practitioner, take a position at a pharmaceutical company or in the feed industry or work as a policymaker or researcher. You can also opt for a job in teaching or research. Alternatively, you may choose to continue your studies and specialise in a specific field of expertise.
The veterinary profession is a broad field, with excellent employment prospects and good starting salaries!

Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has its own teaching farm, consisting of an organic dairy farm and a traditional sow and sheep farm. The practicals at these facilities will familiarise you with the basics of livestock farming. The Faculty also has its own farm animal clinic and practice and a veterinary hospital for companion animals and horses. The facilities are located around the corner from our university buildings. A large portion of the programme consists of clinical rotations and work placements at our own clinic, the University Farm Animal Practice and external locations.
A close-knit community of students and lecturers
UU Veterinary Medicine students form a close-knit community. There's a great atmosphere; almost everyone knows each another and is active in one of the Faculty's lively clubs and societies. These are very diverse, ranging from a riding club to a society focused on farm animals. Our lecturers are accessible and will guide you throughout the learning process.
