Theology and Religious Studies: Interreligious Studies at Vrije Universiteit

This one-year Master's programme in Theology and Religious Studies focuses on different professional fields.

With a Master’s degree in Theology and Religious Studies you can take up several roles in society. You could become a care provider or assist in peace processes. Theology and Religious Studies: Interreligious Studies

The one-year Master's degree programme Theology & Religious Studies focuses on specific professional fields. You will be prepared for a professional career within or outside religious institutions. Each specialization focuses on their own field.

Interreligious Studies

Globalisation has given rise to an even greater need for religious dialogue in all areas of society, from politics and business to education and daily life. Increasing mobility, changing ways of communication and flows of migrants have all made the world a smaller place – and the need for social cohesion greater than ever. This track will give you the knowledge and skills you need to help build bridges between people from different faith traditions and so contribute to that improved social cohesion. If you want to become part of that, this track might be for you.

Theology and Religious Studies: Interreligious Studies

On graduation, you will have the skills you need to become an interfaith leader in our increasingly multi-religious world. You will be able to critically analyse different theological, philosophical and ideological perspectives at the interface of different religions. You will have acquired inter-religious literacy through your participation in various dialogue activities.

You will be qualified to work in any institution that demands inter-religious competencies: schools, hospitals, governmental and non-governmental institutions as well as corporate environments. Religious professionals and leaders will also benefit from this programme.

Roles that will be open to you when you graduate include:

  • editor in the field of religious publishing. You could, for example, do an internship in this field and go on to pursue a career in religious publishing;
  • a specialist in the field of religion and law, a role that is in demand whenever religious and secular law collide;
  • advisor or manager of educational programmes in the field of religion and society. This is a function that is in increasing demand, given today’s widespread ‘religious illiteracy’;
  • policy advisor on religion in governmental and NGO contexts, such as when a police force has to come to terms with religious radicalism.

If you finish your first four courses with an 8 or higher on average, you may switch from this Master’s programme to the Research Master; this must be approved by the Examination Board before February 1st for a smooth transition.

When you leave, you will have the skills for crossing interfaith borders and building bridges between religions; skills that many employers are looking for today.

Theology and Religious Studies: Interreligious Studies

I have an international degree

The Faculty’s Admission Board will decide upon your admission after having evaluated your complete online application.

In order to gain admission to one of our Master’s programmes, you will need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent.

Students with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology or Religious Studies from a university abroad will only be admitted following an assessment of their degree by the admissions board.

Students with Bachelor’s degrees in other disciplines are also welcome to apply, provided that the degree obtained is from a research-oriented university. Before the start of the academic year the student needs to have an intake with the coordinator of the specialization. The aim of this intake is to discuss possible deficiencies in theological knowledge of the student.

General English language proficiency requirements

VU Amsterdam requires all applicants to take an English test. You can, however, begin your application without having the test results. Exceptions are made for students who have completed a bachelor or master in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.

The minimum English language proficiency requirements for admission to this master programme are:

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall
  • TOEFL Internet-based test: 92 overall
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): A, B, C
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): A, B, C

I have a Bachelor’s degree from a Dutch research university (Bachelor's degree from VU Amsterdam, VU pre-master’s certificate or a Bachelor’s degree from another university)

To be accepted for one of our Master’s tracks, you need to have at least the following two qualifications:

  • a Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Religious Studies, Social Studies or related studies, Humanities, Psychology or Law; this will need to have been obtained from an accredited research university. You must have at least three full years of academic study, amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent. You may also apply if you have a Bachelor’s degree in a different discipline provided it is from a research-oriented university; in this case you will need to do a premaster’s programme in Theology and/or Religious Studies.
  • a completed course on World Religions, non-Christian Religions or on Religious Literacy. This could be part of your Bachelor’s degree, or a separate course. (See e.g. https://online-learning.harvard.edu/course/religious-literacy-traditions-and-scriptures).
