Content

The Master of Physics with specialisation in nanophysics provides advanced courses on the fundamental physics that determines structure and governs dynamics at the nanometer scale. Topics of direct interest are quantum physics and chemistry, nanoparticles, nanotubes and fullerenes, graphene, nanobiology, nanomagnetism, superconductivity, electron microscopy and spectroscopy, tomography etc.

The courses are taught by renowned scientists in their respective fields. The research teams hosting the programme have a long tradition in theoretical, computational and experimental techniques in nanophysics. The interaction with professors, PhD students and other faculty members is encouraged as it enhances students’ research competences. Ultimately students learn to think ‘out-of-the-box’ and to respond adequately to challenges of emerging and future technologies.

For their Master’s thesis, students can perform frontier research in theoretical, computational as well as experimental nanophysics in research groups such as Electron Microscopy for Materials Science (EMAT), Experimental Condensed Matter Physics (ECM), Condensed Matter Theory (CMT) or Theory of Quantum Systems and Complex Systems (TQC).

The programme is internationally recognised and is an integral part of the Nanomat programme (www.nanomatmaster.eu) with partners in Paris and Uppsala. Students have the possibility to study in other universities, laboratories and scientific institutions in Europe to diversify their competences. This way they acquire profound and personalised excellency in nanophysics, unattainable otherwise.

Career

Graduates receive a Master’s degree of Science in Physics, with a specialisation in Nanophysics, thus providing a diploma in the general field of Physics as well as in the expert field of Nanophysics. The programme is part of the Nanomat programme (www.nanomat-master.eu), and students spending a semester at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris, France) or the Uppsala University (Sweden) may be eligible for a double degree.

Graduates are prepared for specialised activities in the field of industry, research and development, but also science related business and education. All the acquired competences will assist the easy integration into the academic world, the European R&D base, as well as in the private job market. A large fraction of our graduates continue their education in a PhD programme, for which they will have facilitated access at the University of Antwerp.

Why this university?

Let our students tell you why!

Blake Alexander Simmons (USA) - M.Sc. in Biology – Biodiversity: Conservation and Restoration
“This study programme can be considered as pretty international, since almost half of my fellow students are from abroad. I think it’s a great enrichment if you have so much different knowledge and many points of view around. This study experience will certainly make me a better biologist.”

Cyril France (Ghana) - M.Sc. in Development Evaluation and Management
“The study programme is well structured and followed by students from all over the world, which brings a lot of diversity in the classroom.”

Julia Port (Germany) – M.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences: Infectious and Tropical Diseases
“Compared to other European programmes on infectious and tropical diseases, UAntwerp offers courses on broader subject areas such as public health, healthcare, statistics and epidemiology.”

Juliana Pinheiro Maia (Brazil) - M.Sc. in Applied Economic Sciences: Business Administration
“The cases we cover are international and not only considered from a European point of view. The teaching level is very high and the system itself is tough, since there is only one exam at the end of each term.”

Phui San Cheong (Malaysia) – M.Sc. in Computer Science: Computer Networks and Distributed Systems
“The course is quite challenging. The Lecturers expect a lot from the students, so it’s important that you have the required academic background before starting your studies here.”

Slaviša Milovanovi? (Serbia) – M.Sc. in Physics
“UAntwerp has one of the most productive research groups and finest experts.”

Zeynep Savran (Turkey) – M.Sc. in Applied Economic Sciences: Economic Policy
“The thing I like the most in Belgium is how respectful people are for each other, regardless religion or political ideology, for instance. They have respect for diversity, I would say.”
