Are you fascinated by how the human brain works? Do you want to understand why dysfunctions lead to brain disorders Neuroscientists explore the functioning of the brain so that they can fight neurodegenerative disease and mental illness.
The Master’s in Neurosciences at VU Amsterdam is a two-year, full-time programme taught entirely in English. While the first year is made up of courses that are compulsory for all Neurosciences students, in the second year you’ll get to choose one of two tracks, depending on your own area of interest:

Take an integrative approach to the brain and its disease mechanisms
During the programme, you’ll get to grips with all facets of neurosciences – ranging from genes to behaviour, from both fundamental and clinical perspectives. The expert teaching you’ll receive comprises a combination of lectures, research seminars, work groups, demonstrations, lab visits and practicals.
The VU Amsterdam brings all areas of neuroscientific expertise together in Amsterdam Neuroscience. Its mission is to study the brain and its disease mechanisms through an integrative approach that covers everything from molecule to bedside. In Amsterdam Neuroscience, innovation takes place at all levels of study, from molecular to cellular studies, and from circuitry to intact brain and behaviour, both at individual level and at population level.
To prepare for a career in the academic or scientific world, you’ll also work on your own professional development plan as part of our Career & Academic Skills Portfolio course, which spans both years of the programme.

The Neurosciences programme is open to both Dutch and International Students. The Faculty’s Admission Board will decide upon your admission after having evaluated your complete online application.
In order to gain admission to the Neurosciences Master’s programme, you will need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent. We do not require a GRE or GMAT test score. A Bachelors' degree obtained at an applied university or higher vocational education (HBO in Dutch) in most cases does not grant direct access to the programme (only exceptionally high ranking students stand a chance of admission).

To be considered for admission to the Master’s programme in Neurosciences you must meet the following requirements:
General English language proficiency requirements
VU Amsterdam also requires international applicants to take an English test. You can, however, begin your application without having the test results. Please be aware of the fact that it can take a long time to receive the results of English proficiency tests, so plan your test on time! In case you haven’t taken a test yet, we advise you to plan a test date as soon as possible. Exceptions to the English Language Proficiency requirement are made if you have completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.

Specific requirements for the application documents for Neurosciences:
The letter of motivation (a maximum of two pages) should include:
1) Why you want to pursue a career in neurosciences;
2) Why you choose to study Neurosciences at VU Amsterdam.
Your recommendation letters must be written by qualified persons; for instance the supervisor of your Bachelor thesis or coordinator of major Bachelor courses.
If you have obtained a Master’s degree already, also upload your Master’s diploma and transcript of records.
