Discover a versatile field with unexpected applications
Did you know that modern cryptography uses prime numbers, or that bacterial growth is governed by differential equations? Or that the spread of forest fires and infections can be predicted by stochastic models? How about the discovery of gravitational waves, which confirms Einstein’s prediction that spacetime is described by Riemannian geometry?
If you join the Mathematics programme, you can learn about both the fundamental aspects of mathematics and its applications. At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam we develop fundamental mathematical theory in algebra, geometry, number theory, analysis, dynamical systems, probability, statistics and operations research. But we also apply this theory in areas as business analytics, data science, forensic statistics, systems biology, neuroscience, complex systems and many more.

A unique combination of pure and applied mathematics
This two year programme is divided into core courses, elective courses and seminars, and concludes with the Master’s project.
You’ll have the opportunity to specialise either in Pure or in Applied Mathematics, or to opt for the Educational specialisation to get your science teacher degree. Each specialisation has suggested tracks. Can’t decide? Don’t worry – you can switch tracks later on, and you’ll have plenty of freedom to choose your own study path.
In the specialisation Pure Mathematics you focus on one of the classical sub-fields of mathematics. Within this specialisation three tracks are offered, which correspond to fields in which mathematicians at VU Amsterdam do active research:
In the specialisation Applied Mathematics you can choose one of the following tracks:
Both tracks contain a mixture of courses laying mathematical foundations and courses that focus on specific applications.
Last but not least you can choose the Education specialisation. You’ll come away with a teaching certification for secondary education. You’ll not only become a specialist in your field but you’ll also get to share your passion and inspire the scientists of tomorrow.

Your Mathematics degree can take you in many different directions
Your analytical mind and problem-solving skills will make you a valuable asset for all kinds of employers. In turn, you’ll enjoy job flexibility, freedom, autonomy and the satisfaction of contributing to tomorrow’s society.
Professional mathematicians work in research, education, business, finance, technology, data science, healthcare and many other sectors, in positions as modellers or analysts, for instance.
If passing on your knowledge to the next generation is something that inspires you, then the Education track will give you a science teacher degree. Science education is the foundation of innovations that improve our world. Due to the shortage of certified science teachers and the fact that our economy is knowledge-based, your skills will be highly valued both inside and outside the classroom. A science teaching degree gives you the chance to get involved in improving science education – either as a teacher or in another role in the educational sector. Practical and scientific knowledge of teaching methods and educational psychology can steer your career in many directions.

I have an international degree
The Mathematics programme is open to both Dutch and International Students. The Faculty’s Admission Board will decide upon your admission after having evaluated your complete online application.
In order to gain admission to the Mathematics Master’s programme, you will need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent. We do not require a GRE or GMAT test score. A Bachelor degree obtained at an applied university or higher vocational education (HBO in Dutch) in most cases does not grant direct access to the programme (only exceptionally high ranking students stand a chance of admission).
Specific admission requirements for the MSc Mathematics
Direct admission to the Master's programme in Mathematics is possible with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Engineering Mathematics from a university in the Netherlands. If you have a Bachelor's degree in another subject from a university or institute of higher education in The Netherlands or elsewhere, you require the approval of the Examination Board. The main admission criteria are:
General English language proficiency requirements
VU Amsterdam requires all applicants to take an English test. You can, however, begin your application without having the test results. Exceptions are made for students who have completed a Bachelor's or Master's in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.
The minimum English language proficiency requirements for admission to this Master's programme are:
Entrants from higher vocational education (HBO) who hold a teacher's degree in Mathematics (“tweedegraads bevoegdheid wiskunde”) will likely be admitted to a pre-Master's programme, after which they can be admitted to the Teacher variant of the Master’s programme. For other HBO students admission to the pre-Master’s programme is in general not possible, please contact the master’s coordinator for more information.
Direct admission to the Master's programme in Mathematics is possible with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Technical Mathematics from a university in the Netherlands.
If you have a Bachelor's degree in another subject from a university or institute of higher education in The Netherlands or elsewhere, you require the approval of the Examination Board. The main admission criteria are:
Students with a Bachelor's degree from an institution of academic higher education in a field that does not sufficiently correspond with the subject area covered by the Master's programme can request admission to the premaster’s programme. Admission to this programme is only possible if the deficiency amounts to at most 30 EC Mathematics courses. Please contact the master’s coordinator.
