Master of Science Leisure and Tourism Studies at Breda University of Applied Sciences

The boundaries between leisure sectors such as culture, media, events, sports and tourism are disappearing to an increasing extent. That is why this academic master’s programme takes an integral approach to leisure, deriving knowledge from disciplines such as sociology, psychology, economics, management, and marketing. The programme lasts one year and comprises two phases. The first phase is centred around the current three main research programmes in Leisure: Storytelling, Imagineering and Place-making. In the second phase you will work on a graduation project. This government-funded master’s programme is offered in cooperation with Tilburg University. BUAS is the first university of applied sciences in the Netherlands to offer an academic master’s programme.

The statutory tuition fee for students from the EEA is only €2060.

Master of Science Leisure and Tourism Studies at Breda University of Applied Sciences: Curriculum

Phase I - Course and Content

All master classes in this initial phase will have a dynamic set-up in the sense that they are positioned within the context of Leisure in a Network Society. The master classes centre around the three main current research programmes in Leisure: Storytelling, Imagineering and Place-making: Leisure, Creativity and Space (insights into the processes of globalisation, mediafication and commercialisation and their impact on the changing role of leisure in the design of public and private places and spaces), Understanding Leisure Attractions and Events (insights and research in the field of change management, innovation, networks, co-creation, attractions, theme parks, and ‘eventful cities’), Imagineering as Strategic Design in Leisure Organisations (strategic management, value creation, and strategic design), Experience Marketing (marketing and market research. Data analysis of consumer experiences related to a leisure organisation is one of the topics addressed in this course, Analysing Leisure Interactions (introduction to the field of practice theories, interaction rituals, lifestyles, and decision making in practices).

Phase II - Master’s Thesis

To ensure a smooth progression from the course and content phase (phase I) to the thesis phase (phase II), students will first attend the Seminar Leisure Studies. They will be placed into theme-based seminar groups, within which they write their individual thesis proposals. Their work culminates in a research thesis on a theme according to their individual preference.

Master of Science Leisure and Tourism Studies at Breda University of Applied Sciences: Admission Requirements

If you have an academic bachelor’s degree in any of the social sciences - such as sociology, psychology,  conomics, management or marketing - or have successfully completed the Bachelor of Science Tourism, Bachelor of Science Leisure Studies, premaster’s programme Leisure Studies, or NHTV’s premaster’s programme Strategic Business Management (SBM), you will have direct access to the Master of Science Leisure Studies. If you have a professional bachelor’s degree, you will first have to complete Breda University of Applied Sciences’ pre-master’s programme Leisure Studies to prepare you for studying at an academic master’s level. After completion of this premaster’s track, you will have direct access to the Master of Science Leisure and Tourism Studies. As a non-native speaker, you need to be able to demonstrate your profiency in English.
