Why in Utrecht? - The real world perspective

The statement ‘the real-world perspective’ summarises succinctly U.S.E.’s mission. It indicates a strong awareness of the complex socio-economic reality: human behaviour is not always ‘rational’ and markets are not always in equilibrium. Institutions are important in understanding economic dynamics and so are the dimensions of time and space. The real world perspective leads to a multidisciplinary-economics approach, a research profile that favours crossing borders between academic disciplines, but also – within the economics discipline – between economics and business. U.S.E. aims to contribute to a society where people thrive, by taking a broad view on welfare and all factors involved. Well-being, cooperation, innovation and curiosity are the core values in the academic profile of U.S.E.

In the MSc programme International Management in Utrecht you will:

Integrate theoretical economics with insights from professional practice
The programme adopts an integrated approach to the teaching of international economics and management. Important corporate issues like merger and acquisition strategies, entrepreneurship, location choice, and financial management are addressed within the context of broader international issues such as globalisation, economic integration, and the rise of emerging markets. You will acquire new knowledge by working with a combination of theory and case studies, as well as working with real-world data obtained from companies. You will also build links to professional organisations and refine your research and analytical skills.

Have a strong base of managerial economics and research skills
This programme gives you a firm academic base in applied research that is relevant for  decision-making in international firms. In the MSc in International Management programme you gain a variety of research skills such as metrics, business statistics and qualitative research methods like survey design and case studies.

Gain from active involvement of experienced practitioners in the programme
In many courses, experienced practitioners from the economics professions will present guest lectures, giving additional real-world perspectives on the interplay between practice and theory. These guest lectures, as well as visits to organisations and financial institutions operating internationally, will help you connect to a network of professionals interested in your career opportunities.

Be part of a small, international community
The high staff-to-student ratio in tutorials encourages close interaction between you, your peers, and your professors and lecturers. The mix of students and lecturers from the Netherlands and abroad gives the programme a unique international environment. Guest lectures from experts in the field, company visits and the possibility to combine your thesis with an internship all provide you with interesting and challenging opportunities to prepare for your future international career.
