Content

The Master of Governance and Development, is an Advanced Master in Development Studies, attracting students from all over the world. Students are introduced to multidisciplinary theoretical and practical insights that will improve their capacity to analyse governance challenges at different levels, in addition to improving the way in which they relate to processes of violent conflict and development.

The future of sustainable development is critically related to the promotion of better governance at the local, national, regional and international level. Both a cause and a consequence of governance failures, violent conflict is incompatible with sustainable development. Processes of state formation, state failure and state reconstruction play a central role in this nexus between development, governance and conflict.

The Master of Governance and Development offers two tracks with specific objectives, courses and target audiences.

  • Track 1: From violent conflict to peace and state reconstruction
  • Track 2: Local institutions and poverty reduction

The Master’s programme comprises 12 months, starting and ending mid-September, and consists of four modules.

Institute of Development Policy | 60 ECTS | 1 year | Full-time

Career

Most IOB students already have professional experience before studying at IOB. Our alumni survey shows that IOB graduates mostly (continue to) work in the government sector (24%), international organisations (19%), NGOs (13%), higher education/research institutes (13%). Some of the most recurrent employers among IOB graduates are within the government sector (e.g. Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Planning), national parliaments, inter/supranational organisations (e.g. United Nations, African Union, European commission, Asian/Africa/ Interamerican Development Bank), national and international NGOs (e.g. Transparency International, Oxfam, Action Aid… ), higher education/research (universities, think tanks,...) and bi- or multilateral donor agencies (e.g. BTC, World Bank, USAID, GTZ).

The survey also revealed that 95% of IOB alumni felt that IOB studies had prepared them adequately for their subsequent careers. Most of them (67%) even occupied a higher position within the organisation after studying at IOB than prior to their IOB masters, while 28% continued at the same level.

Additionally, IOB offers a multi-disciplinary Doctoral Programme, leading to a PhD in Development Studies administered by IOB and granted by the University of Antwerp. Moreover, IOB cooperates with the Faculty of Applied Economics and the Faculty of Social Sciences of UAntwerp to offer interdisciplinary PhD programmes in the field of development.

Applicants with degrees obtained under the European Bologna system must hold a Master’s degree.

Applicants with a three-year Bachelor’s degree do not qualify for admission to this Master programme.

Why this university?

Let our students tell you why!

Blake Alexander Simmons (USA) - M.Sc. in Biology – Biodiversity: Conservation and Restoration
“This study programme can be considered as pretty international, since almost half of my fellow students are from abroad. I think it’s a great enrichment if you have so much different knowledge and many points of view around. This study experience will certainly make me a better biologist.”

Cyril France (Ghana) - M.Sc. in Development Evaluation and Management
“The study programme is well structured and followed by students from all over the world, which brings a lot of diversity in the classroom.”

Julia Port (Germany) – M.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences: Infectious and Tropical Diseases
“Compared to other European programmes on infectious and tropical diseases, UAntwerp offers courses on broader subject areas such as public health, healthcare, statistics and epidemiology.”

Juliana Pinheiro Maia (Brazil) - M.Sc. in Applied Economic Sciences: Business Administration
“The cases we cover are international and not only considered from a European point of view. The teaching level is very high and the system itself is tough, since there is only one exam at the end of each term.”

Phui San Cheong (Malaysia) – M.Sc. in Computer Science: Computer Networks and Distributed Systems
“The course is quite challenging. The Lecturers expect a lot from the students, so it’s important that you have the required academic background before starting your studies here.”

Slaviša Milovanovi? (Serbia) – M.Sc. in Physics
“UAntwerp has one of the most productive research groups and finest experts.”

Zeynep Savran (Turkey) – M.Sc. in Applied Economic Sciences: Economic Policy
“The thing I like the most in Belgium is how respectful people are for each other, regardless religion or political ideology, for instance. They have respect for diversity, I would say.”
