This Master’s programme prepares professionals for the exciting and fast-paced world of business development and entrepreneurship. It combines the rigour of an economics education with the relevance of providing the knowledge and skills for new business development. The rigour of an Economics qualification is reflected in such analytical courses as Empirical Economics, Financial Management, Entrepreneurial Finance, and a targeted Research Project (advancing the lean startup method). The relevance of applying this theory while keeping the bigger picture of new business development in sight, is especially emphasised in courses such as Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Entrepreneurial Marketing, Strategy and Organisation, and Sustainable Entrepreneurship. Next to these core courses there are electives taken from other domains to broaden your horizons within the programme and enable you to tailor it to your ambitions and affinities. The final Master’s thesis, which can be combined with an internship, enables you to demonstrate mastery of that what you’ve learned in this programme.

Each semester is divided into two periods. The academic year consists of eight courses worth 5 EC each, two courses worth 2.5 EC and a ?Master’s thesis worth 15 EC. There is a short break over the Winter holidays.

Business Development and Entrepreneurship at Utrecht University: Career

In the past three decades, most large corporations have been shrinking. Many of them have outsourced a substantial part of their employment to other countries, often outside of Europe. Strong employment numbers in developed economies come largely from new, fast growing companies with an agile and entrepreneurial approach. These companies demand different skills, knowledge and mindsets from their employees than in the old hierarchical environment of business. And increasingly ambitious, young professionals are self-employed, launching their own entrepreneurial businesses.

The MSc in Business Development and Entrepreneurship trains you to become an expert in creating an environment in which new ventures can take hold and flourish. This expertise is highly sought after in business development functions (including innovation, marketing and finance) in large (multinational) corporations. The same applies in entrepreneurial teams, start-ups and various other economic development functions.

Positions by graduates of this programme could include:

  • Entrepreneur, often in a team.
  • Business Developer, often within a fast growing corporation or business unit, but possibly also in the public-private context of incubators.
  • Marketeer,  often focused on the launch of new products and services (with research skills  for this purpose).
  • Venture Finance Analyst, as the review of business plans within financial corporations grows more important each day.

Why in Utrecht? - The real world perspective

The statement ‘the real-world perspective’ summarises succinctly U.S.E.’s mission. It indicates a strong awareness of the complex socio-economic reality: human behaviour is not always ‘rational’ and markets are not always in equilibrium. Institutions are important in understanding economic dynamics and so are the dimensions of time and space. The real world perspective leads to a multidisciplinary-economics approach, a research profile that favours crossing borders between academic disciplines, but also – within the economics discipline – between economics and business. U.S.E. aims to contribute to a society where people thrive, by taking a broad view on welfare and all factors involved. Well-being, cooperation, innovation and curiosity are the core values in the academic profile of U.S.E.

This Master’s programme is based on Utrecht University’s world class research in the domain of entrepreneurship and innovation, and the interaction with business strategy and policy practice by U.S.E. staff members and the broad international network of the Utrecht Center for Entrepreneurship. A strong interaction with the market is especially important for this Master, so several incubators from Utrecht (such as Holland Startup and UtrechtInc) have contributed to the design and implementation of the programme.

In the MSc programme Business Development and Entrepreneurship in Utrecht you will:

Focus on high impact new ventures
The programme focuses on how opportunities for new ventures can be identified, evaluated and successfully pursued. Why do some new ventures have high impact on business and society, and why do most new ventures never become sustainable are key questions to be solved from both an academic and practical point of view. You will acquire new knowledge on high impact new ventures by working with a combination of theory and case studies, as well as working with real-world data obtained from different companies and markets. You will also build links with professional organisations and refine your research and analytical skills.

Experience the advantages of a multidisciplinary approach
New business development is a process that requires insights from multiple disciplines – you can’t think ‘out of the box’ if you are focused on just one discipline. This programme provides you with a strong Economics foundation for this process, but also connects this to insights from other relevant disciplines such as sociology, geography, psychology, and innovation studies.

Focus on entrepreneurship in education
U.S.E. and the Utrecht Center for Entrepreneurship have become key players in the creation and provision of courses in the domain of business development and entrepreneurship.

Have a strong connection with science (Beta, Geo and Medicine Faculties)
The programme on Business Development and Entrepreneurship explicitly analyses how scientific knowledge can be turned into useful applications in business and society, and how entrepreneurship is instrumental in dealing with sustainability challenges. In this respect, the programme connects to world class scientific knowledge in other UU faculties, including Sciences, Geosciences, and Medicine.

Be part of a small and international community
The high staff-to-student ratio in tutorials encourages close interaction between you, your peers, and your professors and lecturers. The mix of students and lecturers from the Netherlands and abroad gives the programme a unique international environment. Guest lectures from experts in the field, company visits and the option to combine your thesis with an internship all provide you with interesting and challenging opportunities to prepare for your future career.
