The Master's
Modern Chemistry is unthinkable without the achievements of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry. These disciplines have become a mandatory tool for the molecular sciences towards the end of the 20th century, and they will undoubtedly mark the new era that lies ahead. From this perspective, the training and formation of new generations of computational and theoretical chemists with broad knowledge is of paramount importance. Experts from several European universities have decided to join forces. Co-ordinated by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the initiative for a European Master’s Course on Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling (TCCM) was launched in 2005. In 2007, the programme was awarded accreditation by the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTNA).
My profile
Prerequisites
The general qualifications obtained upon the completion of an academic Bachelor’s degree are considered prerequisite for the programme. Furthermore, you should have acquired insights into the fundamental processes of chemistry and the way in which it contributes to other scientific domains, for example biology and nanotechnology. You should have a keen interest in advancing your understanding of the molecular basis of chemistry and be prepared to master the mathematical and computational techniques this requires.
Purpose
The aim is to form scientists that are able to address a wide range of problems in modern chemical, physical and biological sciences through the combination of theoretical and computational tools.
Studiumsverlauf
Study programme
The TCCM Master’s is organised in a two-year structure, equivalent to 120 ECTS. The first year of the Master’s introduces you to concepts and methods. The core of the programme is an international intensive course, which is intended to bring all the participants to a common level of excellence. It takes place in the summer between year 1 and year 2 and runs for four weeks. It welcomes several international experts as teachers. The second year of the Master’s is devoted to tutorials on the material of the intensive course and to a thesis project that is carried out in part at another university of the consortium. In the summer of 2010, the intensive course will be organised by the universities of Porto and Lisbon in Portugal.
Karriere
Career prospects
In addition to sound theoretical knowledge, the programme’s graduates are prepared to apply any of the scientific codes on the market, or to develop new codes to address new requirements associated with research or productive activities. Graduates will have attained the necessary skills to pursue a scientific career by enrolling in the doctoral programme in Chemistry, Physics or Material Science. You can also develop professional activities as an expert in molecular design in pharmaceutical industry, petrochemical companies and new-materials industry. You will also have a suitable profile to work in any company as a computational expert.
